What Decides the Price of a Business Website in India
Quotes for the same website can differ by a huge amount. Here is what actually drives the price, what to ask for in writing, and how to avoid paying for things you do not need.
Ask three agencies for a website quote and you may get three very different numbers. That confuses most business owners, and it is how many of them end up overpaying, or buying something cheap that does not work.
This guide explains what really decides the price, so that you can compare quotes properly.
The honest answer: it depends on what you need
A website is not one product. A five-page site that shows your services and a phone number is a small job. An online shop with payments, stock and delivery, or a site that connects to your accounts, is a large one. The price follows the work involved, so the first job is to write down what you want the website to do.
What goes into the price
- Number and type of pages. A simple site has a home page, about, services and contact. Every extra page needs writing, design and testing.
- Design. A ready-made template is cheaper and faster. A design made from scratch for your brand costs more but looks like yours alone.
- Features. Enquiry forms, WhatsApp buttons and maps are simple. Online payments, user logins, booking systems, dashboards and a blog that you can edit yourself add real work.
- Content. Someone must write the text and prepare photos. If you supply good content, the price drops. If the agency writes and shoots everything, it rises.
- Speed and mobile design. Most of your visitors will use a phone. A site that is built carefully for phones and loads quickly takes more effort than one that merely shrinks.
- Search engine basics. Proper titles, descriptions, page structure and a sitemap should be part of the job, not an optional extra.
- Security and backups. Safe forms, updated software and regular backups protect you from being hacked or losing the site.
- Integrations. Connecting the site to a CRM, an ERP, payment gateways or an email tool means extra work and testing.
The ongoing costs people forget
The first quote is rarely the full cost over a year. Ask about:
- The domain name, which you renew every year
- Hosting, which is the server that keeps the site online
- Maintenance and updates, and who does them
- Changes after launch, and whether small edits are free or charged
- Email addresses with your own domain
Questions to ask every agency
- What exactly is included, page by page and feature by feature, in writing?
- Who owns the domain, the hosting account and the code when the work is finished?
- How many rounds of changes are included?
- How long will it take, and what do you need from me to keep to that time?
- Will the site work well on phones, and can you show me a similar site you built?
- What happens if I want to move to another provider later?
Red flags
- A very low price with no list of what you get
- The agency registers the domain or hosting in its own name and will not transfer it
- No written agreement, or a contract you cannot understand
- Promises of "number one on Google", which nobody can guarantee
- No examples of earlier work, or examples that you cannot visit and test
Get the same quote from everyone
To compare fairly, write a short brief with your pages, features, the content you will provide and your deadline, and give the same brief to each agency. When the quotes come back, compare what is included, not just the total. A quote that is 20 percent cheaper but leaves out mobile design, search setup and backups is usually not cheaper at all.
Start small, grow later
You do not need everything on day one. A well-built, fast site that explains what you do and makes it easy to call or message you is worth more than an expensive one with features nobody uses. You can add booking, payments or a blog when your business needs them.
